🚜 Heavy Equipment Hauling Checklist (Skid Steers, Forklifts, Compact Tractors & More)

Why Preparation Matters

Shipping heavy equipment isn’t just about loading it on a trailer, it’s about safety, precision, and clear communication. A few small details, like forgetting exact dimensions or leaving an attachment on, can delay pickup or increase your cost.
This checklist walks you through everything you need to prepare before Anapa’s carrier arrives.

1. Measure and Record Dimensions

Before requesting a quote, know your equipment’s length, width, height, and weight.
Carriers use this data to match your load with the right trailer (hotshot, step-deck, or lowboy).

Pro Tips:

  • Measure with all attachments removed.

  • Include the height of the cab or ROPS if applicable.

  • Confirm weight from your manual or manufacturer plate.

2. Remove or Secure Attachments

Buckets, forks, or implements can shift during transport.

  • Remove small attachments (e.g., augers, buckets, blades) if possible.

  • If left attached, secure tightly using chains or straps.

  • Transport loose items separately on pallets.

📸 Before pickup, take photos of each attachment and its condition.

3. Check for Leaks, Fluids & Cleanliness

A clean machine makes inspections easier.

  • Wash off excess mud, debris, and oil buildup.

  • Check for fluid leaks, report any drips or cracks to dispatch.

  • Tighten caps and seal hydraulic lines.

💡 A clean undercarriage also prevents DOT violations for debris during transit.

4. Verify Running Status

Make sure the carrier knows if your equipment runs under its own power.

  • “Running” means it can start, move, and steer.

  • “Non-running” loads require winches or tilt-decks, confirm with your dispatcher.

  • Provide jump-start or battery information if it’s been stored.

⚙️ Note: Clearly label controls if operators are not available at pickup.

5. Prepare the Loading Area

Safety starts before the truck arrives.

  • Ensure a clear, level space for loading: 60-80 feet of open area is ideal.

  • Ground must support the combined weight of trailer and equipment.

  • Move other vehicles, materials, and obstacles out of the way.

🅿️ If pickup is at a business or yard, make sure gates and permits are accessible.

6. Fold, Lower, and Secure Moving Parts

Booms, arms, and blades must be fully retracted or locked.

  • Fold backhoes and lower buckets.

  • Retract lift masts.

  • Lock parking brakes and disconnect power (if electric).

  • Tie down with grade-70 or higher chains at all designated tie-down points.

🔒 Anapa carriers always verify tie-down points before departure.

7. Permits & Oversize Considerations

If your machine exceeds legal width, height, or weight limits, an oversize permit may be required.
Typical limits:

  • Width: 8.5 ft (102 in)

  • Height: 13.5-14 ft

  • Weight: 80,000 lbs GVWR

Anapa will help determine if permits or escorts are necessary, just share exact dimensions early.

8. Documentation & Contact Information

Have your Bill of Lading (BOL) ready with:

  • Equipment description and serial number

  • Pickup & delivery contacts

  • Access hours for each location

Include gate codes or special instructions (yard forklift needed, narrow driveways, etc.).

📲 Tip: Share at least one backup phone number in case the driver needs assistance.

9. Photos Before Pickup

Take 4–6 photos before pickup showing:

  • Full machine (left, right, front, rear)

  • Tires/tracks and hydraulic areas

  • Any existing dents, scratches, or wear

These photos help document condition and ensure full transparency at delivery.

Anapa always adds geo-tagged pickup and delivery photos to your digital record.

10. Payment and Final Confirmation

  • No deposit until pickup is confirmed.

  • Payment is due at pickup unless otherwise stated on your quote.

  • You’ll receive digital documentation via email or SMS once the carrier is assigned.

💬 Need insurance info?
All carriers are fully insured and vetted. For light-duty vehicles, optional Worry-Free Guarantee ($199) adds additional shipper coverage (not available for heavy equipment).
